Incident Management Team Training

Equip Your Team to Lead Through Crisis with Confidence and Clarity

Practical training for real-world incidents. Not just theory.

Introduction

The Incident Management Team (IMT) Training Course is designed to prepare nominated individuals in any size of organisation to react and respond to an unplanned event, thus improving overall organisational resilience.

This two-day course will combine theory and practical training to cover the core aspects of an IMT, including: an overview of incident management; IMT roles and responsibilities; information management; decision making; maintaining situational awareness; internal and external communications during an incident; and post-incident activities.

Practical activities will reinforce the theory, culminating in a scenario-based exercise to pull all aspects of the course together.

A well-managed incident may prevent it from becoming a crisis and communications is a key aspect to this. It is important to identify personnel who can help manage the media at local and regional levels to support the PR effort.

Objectives

  • Understand what incident management is, what events might lead to an incident and what the phases of response will be.

  • Identify incident management response levels and what the specific responsibilities of an IMT and its individual members are.

  • Recognise the critical role of information management in incident management, identify effective strategies for collecting, organising, and disseminating accurate information during an incident, and apply these principles to enhance situational awareness, decision-making, and communication within an IMT.

  • Understand the purpose and critical importance of setting up an Incident Management Room (IMR), including its key processes, roles, and practical
considerations, ensuring readiness for effective incident response and
    management.

  • Explain key concepts underpinning incident management, apply structured decision making processes to assess and prioritise actions during an incident.

  • Recognise the importance of situational awareness during incident management, utilise tools and techniques to enhance awareness, distinguish between known, assumed, and unknown information, and effectively apply these insights to support decision-making and prioritise responses in dynamic situations.

  • Understand the importance of external coordination and communication during incidents, effectively map and engage stakeholders, liaise with multi-agency and contractor teams, and apply best practices for media management and messaging to safeguard organisational reputation and ensure accurate information dissemination.

  • Apply the practical elements of IMT activation and IMR set-up, including responding to a realistic scenario, delivering an initial brief, and ensuring the team and resources are effectively coordinated to support incident response priorities.

  • Demonstrate key IMT actions through scenario-based discussions and practical exercises, including responding to dynamic incident developments, coordinating team activities, and effectively managing communications and priorities during the react, respond, and recover phases of an incident.

  • Comprehend the purpose and process of debriefs and post-incident analysis, apply structured frameworks such as the PDCA cycle, differentiate between hot and cold debriefs, and leverage lessons learned to enhance organisational preparedness, response, and recovery in future incidents.

Overview

Inverroy’s training team include former members of the UK Emergency Services and Armed Forces as well as specialists from a variety of high-risk industries who have many years of experience managing the command and control of emergency situations. Using this experience, the course will provide both theory and practice to give attendees the confidence and competence to undertake their IMT roles.

During the practice sessions, delegates will work as an IMT. They will be given a fictitious scenario to work through where they will be guided by Inverroy staff to ensure that key activities are completed and that the processes required of an IMT are exercised, such as briefings and accurate record-keeping.

The course scenarios are adapted specifically for each organisation.

Participation

The IMT Training course is a two-day course designed for a minimum of eight and maximum of delegates.

Attendance is recommended for:

  • Members of an IMT.
  • Senior Leadership.
  • Members of other incident response teams within the organisation, such as Duty Managers, Emergency Response Teams or the Crisis Management Team.

Inverroy will provide supporting course information to all participants prior to the course and an accredited certificate upon course completion.

We’ve found the team at Inverroy a joy to work with, very committed to getting to know us and how our organisation works and what it needs. This was critical to building a plan that works for us. It’s been a very positive working relationship and the table-top exercise was an experience that everyone gained huge value from, allowing us to test the plan and gain a better understanding of how we all click together during times of crisis and challenge. We’re looking forward to our continued work together in the future.
