In-depth analysis on the resilience of a major energy organisation

How Inverroy developed, delivered and continuously adapts the Business Impact Analysis – the bedrock on which all good business continuity planning sits

At a Glance:

  1. Developed a bespoke question set optimised for the client.
  2. Gathered of all relevant data and converted it to develop robust BIAs and a Business Continuity Plan.
  3. Achieved accurate and filterable recording of all data, that can be continually updated over time.

The Client:

A global energy company.

Their Challenge:

The organisation was operating in an under-developed country in an unstable region where output can take precedence over Health and Safety. The power supply can be fickle, supply chain unreliable and it’s expensive to employ people to work there.

Inverroy's Approach:

It was important to study the business in depth first to be able to re-design the standard BIA questions to ensure they were applicable to the client (whilst maintaining compliance with ISO standards and BCI good practice guidelines).

Inverroy divided the questions into five subsets; Infrastructure, People, IT/Data, Supply Chain and Horizon-Scanning.

Infrastructure

An office is an office and can usually be replicated by employees working remotely. However the infrastructure onsite also included, but not limited, to a waste-processing facility, medical clinic, laundry and secure front gate and perimeter.

People

Loss of key people. Inverroy looked at what critical skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications are needed to replace loss of staff and where to find the relevant people with these skill sets. Alternatively if recruitment wasn’t an option training programmes were initiated with existing staff to prepare them to take over.

...

IT/Data

Understanding and recording all IT systems and applications used by the client (which is often more than we all think).

Inverroy worked with the client to identify how business activities can continue if any IT system or application is disrupted for one day, seven days and 14 days to allow time for the disruption to be fixed.

Inverroy also advised on identifying IT systems that are no longer being used and stop paying the license!

Supply Chain

We identified the critical, long-lead-time and expensive supplies, and advised not to store them all in one place. If there is a fire in that area, it is all lost in one go.

Horizon Scanning

Inverroy looked at what the Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legislative and Environmental (PESTLE) factors are likely to impact the business.

These can range from international treaties to fluctuations in the value of the US$, to elections, to environmental catastrophes to 5G.

We worked out the most serious and most likely impacts on the business (sometimes the same thing) and built the contingency plans from there.

The Result:

Inverroy worked with all the departments to gather answers to each of the bespoke questions and recorded everything into a templated spreadsheet which was designed to be interrogated, filtered and searched as required.

Through this Inverroy was able to build a comprehensive, bespoke and current set of data which can genuinely inform early and help with effective decision-making and planning.

The project was designed so that the client can continue to review and update the answers easily and efficiently as needed on a quarterly or bi annual basis.

“I just want to say how great it is to have Inverroy on the team and handling this role. Their organisation, documenting and leadership is great to see and absolute (sic) necessary with these ongoing issues”

“Really top-quality analysis here – I hadn’t really been thinking about how the Middle East played into the Russia/West tension before reading this, but Inverroy raised a lot of really insightful points”
